Pensioners share memories to boost wellbeing

Research indicates that revisiting and sharing personal recollections can enhance mood, diminish feelings of isolation, and reinforce an individual's sense of identity and self-worth. This was the focus of a recent meeting held by the Hornsey Pensioners Action Group (HPAG).

The publication chronicles the experiences of Reginald Parrish in World War One and his son Ted in World War Two.

The meeting, held earlier this year, centred on how members came to live in Crouch End. Four speakers initiated the discussion with their personal histories, with one member born in Hornsey in 1955 and the others arriving as adults between the 1960s and 1970s. As the floor opened, attendees shared vivid memories of Crouch End during the 1960s and 1970s. Recalled locations included The Queens pub, The Railway Tavern (a spot frequented by staff from the Hornsey Journal and BT), the Bird’s Nest nightclub in Muswell Hill, Wilsons department store, and performances at Hornsey Town Hall.

One member, in his 90s, recounted his time working as a swimming instructor at Park Road pool. Another attendee shared that they came to the area to work at Hornsey College of Art, arriving a year after a notable 'sit in' event. Discussions also touched upon housing in the area during the 1960s and 1970s, with many agreeing that Hornsey had numerous bedsits and accommodation was both easily accessible and affordable.

The Ham & High reported that these discussions about shared experiences are a natural and important element in maintaining or improving the wellbeing of older adults. As individuals age, they may move on from roles and responsibilities that previously defined them, such as being parents, wage earners, or active community members, potentially losing touch with significant past experiences. Talking about one's past can revitalise those memories for the individual and inform others about their life experiences during different decades.
