Architect's home dispute inspired James Bond villain

A disagreement in 1939 over architect Ernő Goldfinger's intention to demolish a cottage in Willow Road, Finchley, to construct his own modernist residence ultimately contributed to the creation of a famous literary character. Neighbours, including author Ian Fleming, reportedly opposed the demolition and Goldfinger's contemporary architectural approach.

Fleming's objections to Goldfinger's plans and style reportedly continued beyond the initial dispute. Following conversations with John Blackwell, a cousin of Goldfinger's wife Ursula, Fleming used the architect's surname for the villain in his 1959 James Bond novel. The character, Auric Goldfinger, was depicted as an eccentric Marxist and an egoist. Upon discovering the novel's content, Goldfinger threatened legal proceedings against the publisher, Jonathan Cape. He argued that the uncommon nature of his surname in Britain made its use in the novel a direct and damaging attack on his personal reputation. The publisher agreed to an out-of-court settlement. This included covering Goldfinger's legal expenses, providing him with six complimentary copies of the book, and agreeing to refer to the character as "Auric Goldfinger" in future editions to distinguish the fictional creation from the architect.

Further complications arose when the 1964 film adaptation became popular. As Goldfinger's home at 2 Willow Road was listed in the telephone directory, pranksters reportedly made calls to the property. These calls sometimes involved singing the theme song or impersonating the character James Bond.

Ernő Goldfinger, who moved to London in 1934, was also known for designing significant London landmarks such as Trellick Tower and Balfron Tower. He also designed schools for the London County Council and office complexes. His approach to his own concrete structures from the 1960s was described by him as being built as if for himself. Goldfinger and his wife Ursula lived in Balfron Tower for a period, hosting parties to gather resident feedback that informed the design of Trellick Tower. His former family home at 2 Willow Road is now maintained by the National Trust and is accessible to the public.
