Hendon shop owner fined for selling knife to teenager

Barnet Council has successfully prosecuted Akif Durmaz, the owner of Hendon International Food, for selling a knife set to a minor. The incident occurred during an undercover test purchase operation conducted in December 2025. Durmaz, whose shop is located on Vivian Avenue, entered a guilty plea at Willesden Magistrates Court on September 3rd. The court imposed a fine of £3,080 upon him, alongside an order to pay £1,500 in costs to the council.

Knife Surrender Initiative

In its ongoing efforts to combat knife crime, Barnet Council introduced permanent knife surrender bins last year. One such bin is located on Bunns Lane, NW7, and a mobile bin was also available for a single day within the borough. These measures are part of a wider London-wide initiative, supported by funding from the Home Office, aimed at tackling knife crime. The bins offer a secure and anonymous method for individuals to dispose of knives and other bladed weapons. For safe disposal, items should be wrapped in multiple layers of cardboard or paper, secured with tape, ensuring the blade is fully protected and the item cannot be easily retrieved. While carrying a knife in public is an offence, transporting it directly to a surrender bin in this wrapped manner is considered reasonable.
