Wildfires Sweep Southern Europe, Two Firefighters Die in Crete

Two Greek firefighters have died after becoming trapped while tackling a wildfire that spread through the Rethymno area of Crete. Gale-force winds intensified the blaze, prompting the evacuation of several villages. This incident is the latest in a series of summer wildfires affecting southern Europe.

The fire department confirmed the two men were working near the western city of Rethymno when they became trapped. Witnesses reported multiple fires breaking out on Crete, with the most severe fire front extending approximately 15 kilometres. Wildfires have also been reported on the Greek islands of Paros and Lesbos, as well as in Trifylia on the mainland.

Widespread Blazes Across the Continent

In southern Turkey, a fire in Muğla province necessitated the closure of the main Fethiye to Antalya highway and the evacuation of part of a hospital. Meanwhile, Spain and France are experiencing their fourth heatwave of the summer, with firefighters working to control major blazes and prevent flare-ups.

Spain has seen its largest recorded wildfire at Burgohondo in Ávila province, west of Madrid, where over 43,000 hectares have burned. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the following 12 hours as "decisive" for controlling a wildfire near the capital, citing high temperatures, low humidity, and wind gusts as concerns. In total, more than 207,000 hectares have been consumed by wildfires in Spain this year.

Authorities have permitted thousands of residents to return to their homes in the Madrid, Ávila, Toledo, and Castellón regions. However, the mayor of Chapinería, Lucía Moya, told Telemadrid that many residents returning have lost their homes and livelihoods, facing an "arduous task" to recover. In the southern city of Seville, a woman who sustained severe burns in the Los Gallardos fire in Almería earlier in July has died from her injuries, according to authorities. Fourteen people previously died in the Almería fires.

Fires are also active in Portugal's Vila Real district, with civil protection officials monitoring an active front near a water treatment plant and a gas depot. In south-west France, fires in the Gironde region remain "stabilised" but officials warn of dry winds and temperatures reaching up to 41C. The mayor of Le Barp, Blandine Sarrazin, described the situation as "getting harder" and urged vigilance.

Climate Change Impact

The Copernicus Climate Change Service reports that Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, contributing to increased summer heatwaves, water supply pressure, and more intense wildfires. Fire services in France have implemented special measures to protect defence and aerospace industry sites in Gironde.
