In Spain, the number of fatalities from wildfires has risen. A woman injured in a blaze in Almería died in hospital, bringing the total deaths in that region to 14. This incident occurred as a wildfire in Ávila, west of Madrid, has now become the largest on record in Spain, consuming 50,000 hectares of land. Data up to 22 July indicates that wildfire weather across the European Union has been more severe this year than ever before. Both France and Spain have set new records for the cumulative area burned by the end of July. The European Forest Fire Information System has warned that fires could continue burning until early November, potentially marking a record-breaking year for land area affected.

Experts attribute the extreme conditions to a combination of factors, including a wet winter and spring leading to heavy vegetation growth, followed by a hot and dry summer that has created abundant fuel. The abandonment of farmland, which historically helped fragment landscapes and limit fire spread, is also cited as a contributing factor.
