A significant wildfire at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk led to a major incident declaration and the evacuation of several properties. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews were still working on the blaze on Thursday morning after it began on Wednesday evening.

The fire service stated that throughout Wednesday night, crews focused on safeguarding properties such as Coastguard Cottages, Mount Pleasant Farm, and Cliff House Holiday Park. All residents from these locations were successfully evacuated. The fire spread south-west towards St James’ Church, prompting the major incident declaration due to its scale and complexity.

Station manager Dan Davis of Suffolk Fire and Rescue confirmed that approximately 90 firefighters were on the scene. He described the situation as a large-scale, wind-driven forestry fire and urged the public to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed.

The wildfire occurred during a period of high temperatures across the UK. The UK Health Security Agency issued an amber heat-health alert for London and other regions, which was set to remain in place until 9am on Thursday. This alert indicated increased health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals.

In parallel, the Environment Agency issued warnings that parts of England, including London, were experiencing 'flash drought' conditions. This was attributed to a combination of very low rainfall and high temperatures recorded over the summer.

Weather outlook

Looking ahead, the Met Office forecast a change in weather patterns, with cooler temperatures expected across much of the UK. Modest rainfall was also predicted, though it was noted that these amounts might not fully compensate for the rainfall deficit experienced during the summer.
