Percy Wilkinson, a third England rugby player, died at the age of 37 in Brazil during a yellow fever epidemic. He arrived in Bahia, described in contemporary accounts as a beautiful but deadly town for Europeans, just two weeks before his death in 1897.

Wilkinson was one of several Britons to contract yellow fever in the region at the time. His death was reported in Victorian newspapers, which highlighted the risks faced by travellers in tropical climates.

A book of sporting and personal histories

All three men’s stories appear in *The Lives of England Rugby Players 1871 to 1899*, written by Phil Hill and published this year. The book draws on historical records to document the lives of rugby players from the sport’s early decades, including their achievements beyond the pitch.

Hill’s research was featured in the *Ham & High* earlier this month. The article noted that the lives of these players read more like Victorian adventure novels than conventional sporting biographies.
