US Consulate in Toronto Shot At Again

Authorities in Toronto are investigating a gunshot that hit the United States consulate building on Monday morning. The incident, which occurred around 04:45 local time, is the second shooting at the diplomatic mission this year. Officers discovered a shell casing at the scene, and damage was visible on the building's facade. Police reported that a white car, lacking a license plate, was seen speeding away from the location immediately after the event.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and international law enforcement partners are assisting Toronto police with the investigation. Superintendent Jonathan Ko of the RCMP described the event as "another troubling incident," while Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow labelled the attack "brazen." Police have stated that at least two individuals were inside the consulate at the time, but the building's security meant they likely did not hear the shot. Deputy Chief Frank Barredo of Toronto Police assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.

This latest event follows a similar shooting outside the same consulate in March. That incident was classified as a "national security incident" by police, and no one was injured. In June, police conducted raids related to the March shooting, during which an officer was killed. Several individuals aged 18 and 19 were subsequently arrested in connection with a series of shootings, including the March consulate attack, which investigators linked to a gun-for-hire network. Police have not yet confirmed if the current shooting is connected to this network or specified a motive.

In May, US officials apprehended an Iraqi national, identified as Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi, who was allegedly planning numerous attacks across North America and Europe. Targets reportedly included Jewish institutions and US interests, with the Toronto consulate mentioned as a potential site. It remains unclear if al-Saadi is connected to the current investigation.
