Tate Modern exhibition honours Ana Mendieta

Tate Modern is presenting a large-scale exhibition dedicated to the work of Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. The exhibition explores Mendieta's engagement with profound themes including death, displacement, and regeneration. Visitors can view a range of her creations, from photographic self-portraits where she manipulated her appearance, to performances documented on film. One video featured in the show displays Mendieta with blood trickling down her forehead. Another piece, Ñañigo Burial (1976), involves black ritual candles arranged in the outline of a person, intended to be lit according to lunar cycles throughout the exhibition's duration.

A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to Mendieta's Silueta series, created between 1973 and 1980. These works involved inscribing the outline of her body into natural landscapes using materials such as flowers, fire, sand, mud, and snow. Mendieta described these pieces as being "basically in the tradition of a Neolithic art." The exhibition also includes examples of her Rupestrian Sculptures, carved into cave walls in Cuba, and her drawings on amate paper.

Ana Mendieta died on September 8, 1985, at the age of 36. She fell from the 34th-floor apartment she shared with her husband, Minimalist sculptor Carl Andre. The Tate Modern exhibition deliberately does not reference Mendieta's death, focusing instead on her artistic achievements. However, the review notes that it is difficult to view her work without considering the circumstances of her end. The exhibition does include a single mention of Andre in an illustrated book of lithographs they created together.

The exhibition aims to recognise Mendieta as a singular and visionary artist of the 20th century. Her work has been seen as particularly relevant today, given her pioneering artistic practice and her engagement with issues such as feminism, with Mendieta having noted in 1980 that American feminism had "failed to remember us" and was "basically a white middle-class movement."
