Swifts Face Record Groundings Amidst Heatwaves

A significant increase in young swifts found on the ground has been attributed to the recent hot weather. These birds, which nest in warm locations such as under roof tiles, are struggling to cope with extreme temperatures. This is causing fledglings to leave their nests prematurely, resulting in a record number of casualties.

Graeme Bowd, who assists in running the Swift SOS volunteer network, stated that during periods of intense heat, the organisation was receiving around 50 grounded young swifts daily. This figure is described as unprecedented. Across the UK, Swift SOS has handled approximately 800 such cases this year, with a substantial proportion occurring in London and the surrounding Home Counties due to the large swift populations in these areas.

The process of rehabilitating a grounded swift fledgling typically takes two to three weeks. During this time, the birds are rehydrated and fed insects, such as crickets, to build up their weight and strength. Once they reach a weight of 40 grams, they are considered ready to be released back into the air. Bowd emphasised that successful rehabilitation requires specialist knowledge of feeding techniques and knowing when the birds are fit for release.

Swifts are migratory birds that spend most of their lives in the air, only landing to rear their young. They typically nest in the cavities of older buildings. However, modern construction and renovations often seal these potential nesting sites. This, combined with other threats, has led to a significant decline in swift numbers. As reported by the BBC, swift populations have dropped by 60% since the mid-1990s, leading to their inclusion on the UK's Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern.

Swift SOS provides guidance for individuals who find a grounded swift. They advise against throwing the bird into the air or feeding it. Instead, the recommended procedure is to place the bird in a ventilated box in a quiet, warm, dark place and offer hydration using a cotton bud. Vets are not recommended for swift care, and contacting Swift SOS as soon as possible is advised.
