Suzy Lamplugh case haunts detectives

Detectives working on the disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, who went missing 40 years ago, have stated the case continues to 'haunt' them. Lamplugh, 25, vanished on 28 July 1986 after leaving her Fulham office to meet a client. Her body has never been recovered, and she was declared 'presumed dead' in 1993. The Metropolitan Police investigation is scheduled to be moved to an inactive phase next year.

Continuing Mystery

The Metropolitan Police inquiry into Lamplugh's disappearance is one of the few remaining Met cases still managed using a 1980s card index system. Det Ch Insp Teresa Foster, the senior investigating officer, expressed that the fact Lamplugh has never been found is what continues to trouble officers. Foster believes that advances in forensic technology or artificial intelligence could potentially solve the case in the future, or that new information may come to light from individuals.

Lamplugh's diary noted an appointment with an individual identified only as 'Mr Kipper' on the day she disappeared. Her white Ford Fiesta was later discovered abandoned in the vicinity, but there was no sign of the estate agent. The investigation has been one of the UK's largest missing persons operations.

Prime Suspect and Trust

The prime suspect in the case, John Cannan, passed away in prison in November 2024. Cannan was serving a sentence for the 1987 murder of Shirley Banks. Although a file was sent to prosecutors in 2002, there was insufficient evidence to charge him, and no forensic evidence has ever linked him to Lamplugh's disappearance. Efforts to find DNA evidence from her car's headrest and match a partial fingerprint from the rear-view mirror were unsuccessful.

In the months following her disappearance, Lamplugh's parents established the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. This organisation campaigns on personal safety issues and operates the National Stalking Helpline. Det Ch Insp Foster suggested that Lamplugh may have been targeted by a stalker, speculating that a predator might have lured her to a false meeting. This theory aligns with the work of the trust founded by her parents.

The inquiry will transition to an inactive status in approximately one year. While any new information received will still be investigated, the dedicated team will no longer actively pursue the case.
