Ponders End Community Venue Gets Alcohol Licence

Enfield Council has granted an alcohol licence to a Turkish community association in Ponders End. The venue, Ingiltere Tavla Koyu Sosyal Dayanisma Dernegi, can now sell alcohol during member-organised events. The decision was made by the local authority’s licensing subcommittee.

The association, which describes itself as a 'social solidarity' organisation, has approximately 480 members across London. The Queensway building has a maximum capacity of just over 200 seats. Hiring of the venue will be restricted to members, with table service only.

Conditions and Objectors' Concerns

The licence is subject to several conditions designed to address concerns raised by objectors. These concerns included potential traffic issues, littering, and misuse of bins by venue users. The applicant agreed to implement traffic management plans and provide a supervised smoking area for up to seven people.

Further conditions state that children must be supervised by an adult when outside the premises. A duty manager, committee member, or authorised staff must discourage attendees from congregating outside after events. Organisers must also be reachable by phone during and for at least 30 minutes after events.

Robert Sutherland, a consultant solicitor for the application, stated that the venue is a non-profit community centre providing events and activities for adults and children. He clarified that there was no intention to allow non-affiliated members of the public to hire the venue, describing it as a regulated place for specific events like birthday parties and wakes.

Kenan Yildirim, who will serve as the designated premises supervisor, informed the licensing committee about the organisation's services for eligible members of the Turkish community, including elderly individuals and children with learning disabilities. The venue is located at Unit 13 C-D of Queensway Industrial Estate.

Senior Conservative councillor Michael Rye, who chaired the committee meeting, announced the licence was granted in part, subject to the agreed conditions. The applicant also stated that weekly rubbish collections would be introduced to prevent littering.
