Two experts from the University of Oxford reviewed 45 studies that formed the basis for Oxevision's adoption across the NHS. As reported by the BBC, these academics concluded that the studies did not provide strong independent evidence of improved patient safety, acceptability, or cost-effectiveness. Their review identified that some of the studies included contributions from Oxevision employees or were not sufficiently comprehensive.

Prof Christl Donnelly and Dr Maria Christodoulou of Oxford University stated that further independent, randomised, and adequately controlled research is necessary before any definitive conclusions can be drawn about Oxevision's impact. One of the experts acknowledged the inherent difficulties in conducting ideal studies within mental health ward environments.

Nina Ali, a partner at law firm Hodge Jones & Allen representing over 120 bereaved families at the inquiry, commented that the expert findings indicate a lack of clear evidence that Oxevision improves patient safety or care. Hat Porter, a spokesperson for the campaign group Stop Oxevision, highlighted concerns about the absence of robust independent evidence and regulation, suggesting that technologies can be widely deployed without adequate scrutiny. Fiona Scolding KC, speaking for Oxevision, raised questions about the feasibility of implementing randomised controlled trials in mental health units.

Next Steps for the Inquiry

The Lampard Inquiry is scheduled to resume in October, at which point Baroness Lampard, the inquiry's chair, will consider whether to issue interim recommendations. The hearings are expected to continue until late 2027, with a final report anticipated in 2028. NHS England has been approached for comment.
