New Padel Courts Approved for East Barnet

Enfield Council's planning committee has given unanimous approval for the construction of new padel courts. The facility will be situated at the rear of Southbury Leisure Centre in East Barnet. This development marks the borough's first council-owned padel courts, responding to the sport's growing popularity.

Addressing a Sporting Shortfall

Edward Smith, cabinet member for council assets and culture at Enfield Council, expressed his satisfaction with the decision. He stated that the new courts would provide residents with an opportunity to play the sport in a modern facility. Mr Smith highlighted that the courts aim to address a recognised lack of padel provision within the borough. He also noted that padel is the UK's fastest-growing sport and that the courts would contribute to physical and mental wellbeing by encouraging activity and social interaction.

Facility Details and Community Support

The approved plans detail the construction of three padel courts, complete with an overhead canopy and floodlights. The development also includes a dedicated pedestrian access route, two additional Blue Badge parking spaces, and three new cycle parking stands. These courts will be located in an area currently underused, situated between the leisure centre and an adjacent 3G football pitch. The facility is intended to enhance sports and recreation options available to the community. It will operate on a pay-and-play basis, accessible to both members and non-members of the leisure centre. Opening hours are scheduled for 7am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends. A consultation held in March at Southbury Leisure Centre revealed strong community backing, with 94 per cent of 162 respondents supporting the proposal. A further 96 per cent believed padel courts would be a valuable addition to local leisure facilities.
