Met Police Appeal 40 Years After Suzy Lamplugh Disappearance

The Metropolitan Police have issued a final appeal for information concerning the disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, who vanished 40 years ago. Lamplugh, 25, was last seen on July 28, 1986, after leaving her south-west London office. Detective Chief Inspector Teresa Foster, who leads the Met's cold case homicide team, stated that officers are not giving up on finding out what happened to her and locating her body to provide closure for her family.

Lamplugh's disappearance initiated one of the UK's largest missing persons investigations. She was believed to be meeting a client for a property viewing when she disappeared. The case has remained one of the Met's oldest open murder investigations. Despite extensive efforts, police were unable to gather sufficient evidence to charge their prime suspect, John Cannan, who was arrested in 2000. Cannan died in prison in November 2024, having been serving multiple life sentences for other crimes. A forensic review of available material in 2024 did not yield DNA or fingerprints that could resolve the case. Police currently hold 178 boxes of notes and evidence, with 3,000 files uploaded to their system, alongside 26,000 entries from an older tip-off recording system.

Detectives are exploring around 30 potential witness leads over the next year. If no significant information emerges, the case may be classified as inactive, meaning active investigation will cease unless new evidence surfaces. The team's priority remains finding Lamplugh's resting place. Officers hope that future forensic advancements may allow for re-analysis of materials recovered from Lamplugh's abandoned car, including a rearview mirror where two smudged fingerprints have been detected but not yet matched.

DCI Foster expressed hope that individuals who knew John Cannan might still come forward, citing recent successes in other cold cases where family members provided crucial information. Lamplugh's family, who established the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to combat stalking and harassment, described her as a kind, empathetic, and joyful person. Foster believes Lamplugh was targeted by a predatory individual who lured her to a false meeting.
