London Marathon expands to two days in 2027

The 2027 London Marathon will be extended to run over two consecutive days, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April. Organisers expect around 100,000 participants to take part in the expanded event, which will run from Greenwich to Westminster. This marks a significant change from the traditional single-day format.

Disruption concerns raised

Lord Duvall, a London Assembly member representing Greenwich and Lewisham, has asked London Marathon Events for more information regarding plans to minimise disruption. He highlighted that two days of road closures and parking restrictions could significantly impact communities in areas such as Greenwich, Charlton, Woolwich, and Deptford. Lord Duvall specifically questioned how arrangements would accommodate elderly and less able residents who rely on daytime deliveries for healthcare packages.

Businesses in areas like Charlton Village have also expressed concerns. Simi Ghent, owner of Simi’s Italian Deli, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that a two-day marathon on a weekend could lead to a substantial loss of trade. She stated that while the event has the potential to benefit local businesses, clarity on support and mitigation measures is currently lacking.

Mayor's office planning engagement

The Mayor of London has indicated that Greater London Authority (GLA) officers are in communication with London Marathon Events and borough councils. This engagement aims to ensure that if the two-day format proceeds, it is carefully planned and communicated to affected parties. The Mayor's office stated that mitigation strategies include early engagement with residents and businesses, coordinated road closure plans, and maintaining access for emergency services.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, confirmed that organisers are collaborating with boroughs along the route to reduce disruption. He stated that ongoing discussions are identifying residents' needs, including access for essential journeys, to inform planning. Mr Brasher also noted that the expanded event is a one-off celebration intended to raise over £150 million for charities and good causes.

Local council response

A spokesperson for Greenwich Council stated that the council is working with London Marathon Events and the GLA to implement appropriate measures for residents and businesses. They anticipate that road closures will be lifted at the end of each day, similar to the current marathon format. The council expects the two-day event to bring increased atmosphere and economic benefits to the borough, along with inspiring residents to engage in physical activity.
