London Faces Amber Heat Alert Amid Wildfire Risk

London is currently under an amber heat-health alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The alert, which is in place from Tuesday to Thursday, warns of potential health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals, as temperatures are forecast to climb. Forecasters predict that temperatures could reach as high as 35C across south-east England on Wednesday, marking the fourth heatwave of the year.

The hot and dry conditions have heightened concerns about wildfires. A Met Office assessment suggests that fires could become exceptionally severe in parts of London, the South East, and eastern England if they ignite. Fire and rescue services across England and Wales have responded to 706 wildfires so far in 2026. Between 16 and 28 July alone, 208 incidents were recorded, according to the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC). The NFCC noted that these figures do not include wildfires in other parts of the UK, such as a significant incident in Scotland. Fire chiefs have stated that the wildfire risk remains elevated across the country, with eight live incidents being monitored nationally.

While the number of wildfires in England and Wales is currently lower than at the same point last year, fire chiefs caution that continued dry weather, combined with warmer temperatures and harvesting activities in rural areas, creates conditions for fires to start and spread rapidly. Phil Garrigan, chairman of the NFCC, highlighted that over 200 wildfires in just 12 days demonstrates how quickly the risk can escalate. He added that while UK wildfires are not currently on the scale seen in parts of Europe, climate change is increasing the likelihood of larger and more complex incidents in the future.

Provisional data from the Met Office indicates that July has been 3C above the average temperature across the UK, potentially making it one of the hottest Julys on record. In the event of spotting a fire, the public is advised to report it immediately by calling 999 and asking for the fire and rescue service.
