Kevin Keegan, football legend, dies aged 75

Kevin Keegan, the former England player and manager, has died at the age of 75. His family announced his passing on 20 July 2026, stating he had been battling cancer. He revealed his diagnosis of stage four cancer in January 2026 and had begun treatment.

A Storied Career on and Off the Pitch

Keegan, affectionately known as “King Kev” and “Mighty Mouse”, was celebrated for his dynamic playing style, including tireless running and fearless attacking play. Born on 14 February 1951, he began his professional career with Scunthorpe United in 1968 before moving to Liverpool in 1971. At Liverpool, he was a key figure in a successful era, winning three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, and the FA Cup. He also helped the club secure their first European Cup in 1977. After scoring 100 goals in 323 appearances for Liverpool, he transferred to Hamburger SV in Germany for a then-record British transfer fee.

Following his playing career, Keegan moved into management. His first managerial role was at Newcastle United in 1992, where he revitalised the club, leading them to promotion as First Division champions in 1993. He built an exciting attacking team that finished as Premier League runners-up in the 1995–96 season. He later managed Fulham, securing promotion, before taking on the England manager role in 1999. He guided the national team to qualification for Euro 2000 but resigned in October 2000. Keegan then managed Manchester City from 2001, leading them to immediate promotion to the Premier League and later into European competition before departing in 2005. He had a second spell as Newcastle manager in 2008, which lasted eight months.

Beyond his football achievements, Keegan was a recognisable public figure, appearing as a pundit and in documentaries. He was married to Jean Woodhouse and had two daughters.
