Jersey's Tax on Sanitary Products Under Scrutiny

Jersey's social security minister, Senator Elaine Millar, has stated that removing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from sanitary products sold in shops would be "pointless". This stance comes as the island's free period product scheme, launched in October 2022, has incurred costs exceeding £500,000. Senator Millar explained that the government's investment in the free period product scheme has been substantial since its introduction. She argued that the savings from removing GST on shop-bought items would be minimal, estimating a saving of just 25 pence on a £5 monthly spend. In contrast, she highlighted that the free scheme offers a saving of £5 by providing the entire product at no cost. Millar stated that the scheme effectively addresses affordability and accessibility issues, making sanitary products a commonplace necessity that can be obtained without charge. The scheme has also seen an expansion in the range of products and the number of collection points available.

Calls for Tax Removal Persist

Jersey is currently the only location within the British Isles that levies tax on sanitary products. Politicians had previously voted to eliminate the 5% GST on these items in 2022, but this decision was reversed. Senator Millar indicated she would not have supported the proposition to remove GST at that time, believing it would not yield effective benefits. Debbie Taylor, President of Soroptimist International Jersey, described the continued taxation as "another example of inequality" and suggested that even a small saving would be worthwhile. Taylor also noted the increased representation of women in the new government, suggesting it was an opportune moment to advance women's health strategies, including the removal of GST on female sanitary products. Public opinion, as reported by the BBC, also reflects frustration, with one individual calling the situation "absolutely ridiculous" and another stating that tax "shouldn't be added" to necessities.
