A recently installed zebra crossing on Thorpedale Road in Finsbury Park, Islington, has become a focal point for debate regarding public spending. Initially reported as costing £100,000, Islington Council has clarified the total expenditure for the project was £131,000. This figure, however, includes a wider range of street improvements beyond just the pedestrian crossing.

Scope of Works and Cost Breakdown

Islington Council stated that the £131,000 investment encompassed a comprehensive street safety initiative. According to Councillor Rowena Champion, executive member for climate, environment and transport, the project involved widening pavements, enhancing drainage systems, installing a raised crossing to moderate vehicle speeds, upgrading street lighting, and adding high-friction surfacing on the approaches to the crossing. Belisha beacons were also installed as part of the works.

Concerns Over Value for Money

Councillor Jonathan Ward, a Green Party representative, has voiced significant concerns about the cost-effectiveness of the Thorpedale Road project. He highlighted that residents obtained figures through a Freedom of Information request, initially showing a £100,000 cost for the crossing itself. Cllr Ward described the price as "gobsmacking," particularly as the road is not considered a major thoroughfare. He noted that similar pedestrian crossings in other parts of Islington have reportedly been installed for approximately £15,000.

Paul Convery, cabinet member for finance, acknowledged the figure was startling and suggested that unforeseen expenses might have contributed to the final cost. Cllr Ward further commented on the need for imagination and value in public works, questioning the affordability of such expenditures across the borough, especially when compared to simpler interventions like planting.
