Victims' Families React

In a statement, the Goncalves family noted that Kohberger chose not to have his fate decided by a jury and had not previously raised concerns about the evidence or his legal counsel's review of it. They also expressed that the attention Kohberger is now receiving detracts from the victims.

Kohberger was convicted of fatally stabbing housemates Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen on 13 November 2022. The killings occurred in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, a case that garnered national attention before his arrest. Kohberger was a criminology doctoral student at Washington State University at the time. A motive for the attacks has not been disclosed to the court, and investigators were unable to establish a direct link between Kohberger and the victims, despite presenting evidence placing him at the crime scene.

In his communication with the New York Times, Kohberger proclaimed his innocence and indicated a willingness for prosecutors to pursue the death penalty again if they wished. Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador acknowledged the pain this news would cause the victims' families, stating his office is prepared to ensure justice is fully administered. However, legal experts suggest Kohberger's attempt to reverse his plea faces significant obstacles. Sam Newton, an associate professor at the University of Idaho College of Law, told the BBC that Kohberger's sworn testimony during the plea hearing, confirming his understanding of the deal and his guilt, presents a substantial challenge, as courts are reluctant to allow pleas to be withdrawn without concrete proof of serious procedural errors.
