Hummingbird Hawk-Moth Sightings Increase in UK

Wildlife watchers across the United Kingdom have reported a significant increase in sightings of the hummingbird hawk-moth. Luke Burstow, from Sussex, described seeing the insect, characterised as a “grey lump with orange wings”, in his garden on 30 June 2026. This species undertakes migrations to the UK from continental Europe and north Africa.

Experts from Butterfly Conservation have noted a rise in both sightings and inquiries regarding the hummingbird hawk-moth during 2026. Richard Austin, a recording schemes officer at the charity, stated that the organisation has received a large number of reports this year and anticipates a successful summer for the species. However, he cautioned that it is too early to compare current numbers with previous years.

The increase is being linked to environmental conditions. Richard Harrington, an honorary fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, suggested that warm southerly winds, possibly associated with recent heatwaves, may have assisted large numbers of the moths in reaching the UK. He also noted that food plants in the moth's Mediterranean breeding areas might be experiencing drought.

Ray Barnett, a council member at the British Entomological and Natural History Society, added that sunny weather in the UK might be encouraging more people to spend time outdoors, thereby increasing the chances of spotting these insects. He mentioned observing numerous local recordings of the moth in Bristol.

Potential for Residency

There is a possibility that hummingbird hawk-moths could establish a presence in the UK long-term. If the country continues to experience milder winters, a consequence of global warming, hibernating adults that survive the winter may begin to reproduce regularly in the UK. The larvae of the hummingbird hawk-moth feed on lady’s bedstraw and hedge bedstraw, both common wildflowers found in the UK. Barnett commented that if current weather patterns persist, the moth could become a regular resident rather than solely a migratory visitor.
