Haberdashers' Teachers Strike Over Pension Changes

Educators at Haberdashers' Boys and Girls Schools have participated in strike action over changes to their pension arrangements. The industrial action follows the issuance of dismissal and re-engagement letters to a significant number of staff on amended contracts, according to NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union. These new contracts reportedly cap employer contributions to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme at current levels, preventing adjustments based on future government reviews. The schools are located on Aldenham Road, between Radlett and Elstree.

Shaun Murtagh-Howard, National Education Union (NEU) Hertfordshire district secretary, stated that the employer was attempting to “pick their pockets” and called the situation a “betrayal” and “shameful”. Matt Wrack, NASUWT general secretary, described the tactics as “bullying fire and rehire” and “completely indefensible”, suggesting the employer was trying to shift financial responsibilities onto teachers. Lizzie Newman, NEU joint branch secretary for Hertfordshire, noted that teachers signed new contracts “under protest” due to the threat of job loss. Between 60 and 100 staff and parents reportedly attended daily picket lines.

A spokesperson for Haberdashers' schools explained that the institution has faced “very substantial increases” in pension scheme contribution costs, amounting to an additional £2.57 million each year compared to 2015. They stated these rising costs are unsustainable and that the schools have a responsibility to ensure long-term financial stability. The spokesperson also highlighted a “long and careful consultation process” and an “increasingly challenging” economic environment for independent schools.

Councillor Dan Ozarow, who attended a protest, expressed that it was unfair to disregard the original contracts agreed with the professionals educating the children. He urged the school management to return to negotiations. Despite initial strike plans, action scheduled for one morning was called off following the arrangement of ACAS-facilitated talks. Further strike dates for June have been proposed if a resolution is not reached. The Employment Rights Act 2025, which will make 'fire and rehire' automatically unfair dismissal in most cases, comes into effect on 1 January 2027.

Principal Gus Lock stated that the school was disappointed strike action had proceeded, especially as dialogue had continued. He affirmed the school's commitment to working towards a resolution and supporting its community.
