Green Party Leader Faces Police Inquiry Over Image

Green Party leader Zack Polanski is facing a police inquiry following the sharing of a social media image containing a guillotine graphic. Reform UK reported the incident to the Metropolitan Police, accusing the Green leader of inciting violence. Mr Polanski stated that he shared the image inadvertently on his Instagram account and subsequently removed it. He explained that the image was part of a collection of twenty from a photographer, and he admitted to not paying enough attention to its specific content. He described himself as "horrified" by the "dangerous message" depicted. Mr Polanski told BBC Newsnight that he had not yet been contacted by the police but would cooperate fully if they wished to speak with him. He asserted that it would be unusual for the police to contact him as he believes it is clear he did not act deliberately.

The Green Party leader indicated he would not offer an apology to Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, stating an apology would only be appropriate if the action had been intentional. Instead, he committed to condemning political violence and improving his social media practices. A Reform UK source, however, expressed astonishment at Mr Polanski's refusal to apologise, calling his actions "sickening" and questioning his suitability to lead a national political party.

In May, he issued an apology for sharing a post that criticised the police response to the Golders Green stabbings, which he attributed to having done "in haste". Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden commented on the situation, stating that all politicians have a responsibility to be cautious with their online posts, especially given recent events. Mr McFadden suggested that while people can make mistakes, it is ultimately for the police to determine if any action is required.
