Georgia O’Keeffe paintings to debut at Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Gallery in London is set to present an exhibition of 18 paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, drawn from her New Mexico estate known as Ghost Ranch. The exhibition, scheduled for October 2027, will be titled 'Georgia O’Keeffe: Ghost Ranch' and will concentrate on the desert landscapes that significantly influenced her work. O’Keeffe first moved to Ghost Ranch in 1934, initially renting a room on the sprawling 21,000-acre property. She eventually purchased the estate and made it her permanent home. The exhibition aims to explore the artist's connection to this New Mexico location and how it shaped her artistic output. The ranch itself is a place of intrigue, with local rumours suggesting it was the site of a murder before O’Keeffe acquired it, according to Time Out London.

The artist, a prominent figure in twentieth-century painting, is widely recognised for her magnified floral studies. However, her work also encompassed subjects such as animal skulls and the distinctive landscapes of New Mexico. Her painting 'Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1' from 1932 achieved US$44.4 million at auction in 2014, making it one of the most valuable works by a female artist sold publicly.

This upcoming display at The Courtauld marks a significant return for O’Keeffe to the London art scene. Her last major exhibition in the city was held at Tate Modern approximately a decade ago. That earlier show featured more than 100 of her most recognised pieces. The 'Georgia O’Keeffe: Ghost Ranch' exhibition will specifically highlight 18 works from her time at the ranch, many of which are new to British audiences.

O’Keeffe herself described the ranch as 'my country,' expressing a profound connection to the landscape. She stated, 'I’d never seen anything like it before, but it fitted to me exactly,' as reported by The Guardian. The ranch also served as a location for notable photoshoots, including one for Vogue featuring Cecil Beaton.
