First Sea Dragon Fossil Found in Wales

Matthew Myerscough has discovered the fossilised jawbone of a rhomaleosaur, a type of ancient marine reptile often referred to as a 'sea dragon', on Lavernock beach in South Wales. The fossil is approximately 201 million years old and represents the first discovery of its kind in Wales, according to The Guardian.

A Chance Discovery with Deeper Meaning

The discovery occurred by chance while Myerscough was walking along the beach. He initially passed the fossil, which was encased in limestone bedrock, but returned for a closer inspection. The jawbone, notable for its spoon-shaped end, belonged to a rhomaleosaur from the early Jurassic period. Myerscough described the find as 'amazing' and 'really, really exciting'.

For Myerscough, a civil engineer, fossil hunting is more than a hobby; it is linked to his recovery from a near-death experience. In February 2014, he was caught in an avalanche while hiking on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in North Wales. He was buried under more than a metre of snow and found unconscious, having fallen 300 metres. Although he recovered physically within days, the experience left him with lingering thoughts.

He turned to fossil hunting, an activity he had enjoyed as a child, as a way to manage his thoughts. Myerscough explained that the focused nature of searching for fossils induces a mindful, meditative state, allowing him to escape daily stresses. He finds particular solace in searching for fossils by the sea, imagining ancient life in the ocean.

Unlike many in the fossil hunting community who keep locations of significant finds private, Myerscough aims to share his knowledge. He advocates for guided tours for beginners, stating that experts can help new enthusiasts identify fossils. He also highlights that once people start spotting fossils, they tend to see them everywhere.

However, Myerscough also cautions that fossil hunting can be physically demanding, requiring the transport of heavy equipment and rocks. He stresses the inherent dangers of the pastime, including unpredictable cliff falls and rising tides. He advises fossil hunters to be aware of these risks and to take precautions, such as checking tide times and avoiding areas near unstable cliffs.
