Father Sentenced for Role in High School Shooting

Colin Gray, 55, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his connection to the 2024 Apalachee High School shooting. His son, Colt Gray, pleaded guilty to the murders that resulted in the deaths of two teachers and two students in Winder, Georgia. The sentencing of Colin Gray represents the third instance in the United States where a parent has been held criminally responsible for a mass shooting committed by their child, as reported by CBS News, the BBC's US partner. Judge Nicholas Primm delivered the sentence on Thursday. Prosecutors had sought a maximum of 80 years, while the defence argued for a 10-year sentence.

During the sentencing, Judge Primm admonished Colin Gray for failing to monitor his son's online activity and secure firearms. The judge stated that Gray was "the one person who could have prevented" the tragedy. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Colin Gray purchased the AR-style rifle for his son the year before the shooting, despite the son having been questioned by police seven months prior regarding online threats to commit a school shooting. Prosecutors argued that numerous warning signs, including a notebook detailing the son's plans, were ignored.

The defence for Colin Gray contended that the primary responsibility lay with the son, who they stated made a conscious decision to carry out the attack. The prosecution countered that Colin Gray, after observing his son's deteriorating mental state and obsession with school shootings, provided the means for the violence.

Cases holding parents criminally liable for their children's involvement in school shootings are a relatively recent development in the US. In April 2024, parents of a Michigan teenager who killed four students with a gun they had purchased for him were sentenced for their part in that attack. That case was widely considered the first instance of parents being held criminally accountable for a mass shooting carried out by their child.
