England faces driest July in over a century as drought persists

England is enduring its driest July in over a century, with only 4.4mm of rainfall recorded so far this month. The Met Office confirmed this figure ties with June 1925 as the lowest on record for any month, behind only February 1891. The prolonged dry spell has left large parts of the country under drought conditions.

London has experienced 38 consecutive dry days, with the last recorded rainfall at Heathrow on 23 June. The lack of rain has heightened wildfire risks and led to water shortages, prompting hosepipe bans affecting approximately 23 million people across England.

Drought conditions may worsen before improvement

BBC Weather reported that drought conditions could deteriorate further before any relief arrives. Significant rainfall is not expected until October, as current forecasts do not predict the sustained, widespread rain needed to alleviate the situation. Light showers forecast for late next week in London are unlikely to make a meaningful difference.

Met Office chief meteorologist Will Lang said, "While there is always the potential for periods of rain during the remainder of the summer, current forecasts do not favour the widespread, sustained rainfall that would be needed to make a significant difference." He added that recovery from prolonged dry conditions typically relies on more frequent rainfall in autumn.

Reservoirs below seasonal average

Thames Water, one of seven companies to impose hosepipe bans, stated that its reservoirs in London are at 89% capacity, below the seasonal average. Soil moisture levels and river flows across the catchment are also lower than usual. Reservoir storage across England has dropped to 75.3% of average capacity, seven percentage points below the seasonal norm.

The Environment Agency determines drought conditions by assessing river flows, rainfall, groundwater levels, reservoir storage, and environmental impacts. There is no fixed threshold for declaring a drought, but the agency considers multiple factors before making an official announcement.

Health risks amid extreme heat

The UK Health Security Agency reported that extreme heat has led to an increase in heat-associated deaths. Nearly double the number of such deaths have been recorded this year compared to 2023. The agency did not provide an exact figure but confirmed the rise in fatalities linked to the ongoing heatwave.

What happens next remains uncertain. Residents are advised to follow water usage restrictions and stay informed about weather updates. The Met Office and BBC Weather will continue to monitor conditions, with the next significant rainfall not anticipated until October.
