England is enduring its driest July in over a century, with only 4.4mm of rainfall recorded so far this month. Met Office chief meteorologist Will Lang said, "While there is always the potential for periods of rain during the remainder of the summer, current forecasts do not favour the widespread, sustained rainfall that would be needed to make a significant difference." He added that recovery from prolonged dry conditions typically relies on more frequent rainfall in autumn.

Reservoirs below seasonal average

Thames Water, one of seven companies to impose hosepipe bans, stated that its reservoirs in London are at 89% capacity, below the seasonal average. Reservoir storage across England has dropped to 75.3% of average capacity, seven percentage points below the seasonal norm.

Health risks amid extreme heat

The UK Health Security Agency reported that extreme heat has led to an increase in heat-associated deaths. Nearly double the number of such deaths have been recorded this year compared to 2023. The agency did not provide an exact figure but confirmed the rise in fatalities linked to the ongoing heatwave.
