Dangerous Travel Adaptors Sold Online

A significant number of travel adaptors sold through major online platforms have failed crucial safety assessments, according to a warning from Electrical Safety First. The charity purchased 14 different travel adaptors from online marketplaces, including AliExpress, eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and TikTok Shop, all of which did not meet basic safety standards. Some of these devices presented risks of serious electric shock or even electrocution.

Of the eight universal travel adaptors tested, six allowed multiple plug pins to be exposed simultaneously when plugged in. This fault means users could potentially touch live electrical parts carrying up to 240 volts, posing a severe electric shock hazard. The plug pins on all eight universal adaptors also failed to meet dimensional and mechanical strength requirements, meaning they could break off inside a socket, creating further shock risks during removal. Six basic travel adaptors also failed various tests, including missing safety shutters, inadequate fire protection due to missing fuses, oversized holes that exposed live parts, and the acceptance of three-pin plugs without providing an earth connection.

Further testing on six of the adaptors, including four universal and two basic models, assessed the fire resistance and flammability of their plastic components. All six samples failed these tests, indicating a potential fire risk.

Following the findings, the online marketplaces involved have taken action. Representatives from AliExpress stated that identified listings were removed and affected customers were being contacted for a recall. eBay confirmed that identified listings were removed and wider checks were underway. Amazon stated the identified products had been removed from sale, and TikTok also removed the listings. Despite these actions, Electrical Safety First has warned that information from the product listings suggests over 10,000 of these unsafe adaptors may have already been purchased by consumers in the UK.
