Curriculum reforms risk limiting girls' career choices

The instinct behind adapting curricula to meet regional employment needs is understood, particularly as a significant number of young people are not in education, employment, or training, a situation reported to be worsening. However, concerns have been raised that this approach could exacerbate existing inequalities faced by girls.

Research from 2024 indicated that gender stereotypes prevent nearly half of girls aged 11 to 18 from pursuing activities they desire. The confidence gap among girls is particularly pronounced, with levels dropping by 30 per cent between the ages of eight and 14. This decline continues, with girls at age 14 reporting 27 per cent less self-assurance than boys of the same age. This period is critical for forming career aspirations, and a lack of self-belief at this stage can have lasting effects.

Amna Ahmad, CEO of Inspiring Girls International, highlighted the importance of visibility in shaping aspirations. "The mechanism is simple: if girls can’t see it, how can they know they can be it? Girls need to see what is possible," she stated. The organisation works internationally to connect girls with female role models, aiming to expand their understanding of potential career paths. Research from the OECD, involving 41 countries, found that a significant proportion of both boys and girls expect to work in a limited number of popular jobs by age 30, with these expectations heavily influenced by visibility and societal stereotypes.

True transformation, it is argued, requires ensuring parity and actively building in the role of charities and role models to demonstrate what becomes achievable when young people are encouraged to dream beyond their immediate geographical context. Visibility, as evidence suggests, is key to shifting aspirations and preventing the premature narrowing of choices.
