Climate Cafe Offers Space for Environmental Fears

A climate cafe has opened in Wanstead, east London, providing a dedicated space for individuals to openly discuss their anxieties about the environment. The initiative, founded by retired NHS psychotherapist Liz Bodycote, is structured similarly to bereavement cafes, which facilitate conversations around grief and loss.

Empowerment Through Shared Concern

Bodycote explained that the core of the sessions is creating a listening space where personal and deep feelings can be shared. She described the experience as "strangely empowering" to be able to express shared misery. The recent period of record-breaking heatwaves across the UK has made climate change a more immediate concern for many, according to Bodycote. She noted that some attendees feel the urgency of the situation is still being downplayed, leading to frustration with perceived denial and resistance to acknowledging the crisis.

Participants have spoken about the positive impact of attending the cafe. One attendee, Teresa, who travels from Walthamstow, stated that the meetings have left her feeling lighter and provided her with more courage to discuss climate issues with others. She found it surprisingly energising to share profound feelings of unhappiness about the climate with fellow attendees. The sessions, which last for an hour and a half, offer everyone an opportunity to speak without interruption.

Bodycote highlighted the difficulty many people face in accepting their own implication in the environmental damage caused by current systems. She noted that individuals often want to believe they are acting positively but feel caught within a system over which they perceive limited control. While most current attendees are older, Bodycote expressed a hope to engage younger people and those not already involved in climate discussions.
