The novel's synopsis, as reported by The Standard, describes the characters, Marnie and Michael, as being thrown together by a mutual acquaintance. They then find themselves on the brink of a relationship neither anticipated but may require. The BBC has stated the story explores finding connection unexpectedly and navigating midlife challenges. The journey follows Marnie and Michael along the Coast to Coast walking route, from the Lake District to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire.

Filming for the series is planned to occur in the Lake District and in the vicinity of Manchester. Foy, known for her role in 'The Crown', and Macfadyen, from 'Succession', will portray Marnie and Michael respectively. The adaptation aims to capture the novel's blend of intimacy and epic scope, with Nicholls describing his ambition to create something funny, dramatic, and emotionally resonant.

David Nicholls expressed his delight in working on the adaptation, stating his admiration for Abrahamson's previous work and calling Foy and Macfadyen his "dream casting". Lenny Abrahamson also shared his enthusiasm, calling the novel a "beautiful love story, funny, profound and ultimately deeply hopeful". Ed Guiney, executive producer at Element Pictures, described 'You Are Here' as a "life-affirming, positive, funny and full of charm" drama. Lindsay Salt, the BBC's director of drama, noted the book's "charm, humour, heartache and joy".

Nicholls mentioned on Instagram that adapting the book presented challenges due to its focus on unspoken emotions, a theme central to the novel. He highlighted the pleasure of adaptation and working with talented actors. This is not the first time Nicholls' work has been adapted; his novel 'One Day' was previously made into a film and a 2024 Netflix series, while 'Starter For Ten' and 'Us' were also adapted for screen.
