Carly Simon reveals Parkinson's diagnosis

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Carly Simon, 83, has publicly shared her diagnosis with Parkinson's disease. The artist described the neurological condition as 'sometimes frightening' and 'unpredictable' in a statement provided to the BBC. Simon explained that her daily experience with Parkinson's varies, with some days leaving her too fatigued to function, while others allow for more movement, thought, and work.

The diagnosis follows recent surgery to remove a cancerous growth on her face. Simon stated that the procedure altered her appearance, making her more self-conscious in public. She noted the irony of this, given her famous song 'You're So Vain', and admitted the experience provided her 'inner critic quite a lot of new material'.

Living with Parkinson's

Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder affecting the brain, nervous system, and muscle control. It is currently the fastest-growing neurological condition globally. In the UK, approximately 153,000 individuals are living with the disease. Simon's initial symptoms began with arthritis in her knees and hip, but mobility issues persisted even after three replacement surgeries. She described difficulties standing from low chairs and needing assistance to walk.

Following an extensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic, the Parkinson's diagnosis was confirmed. Simon is undergoing medication and treatment, but also experiences episodes of anxiety, depression, and apathy. She described the apathy as particularly challenging, likening it to a lack of internal motivation to engage in daily activities.

New Music and Future Plans

Despite her health challenges, Simon announced that her new album, 'Comes In Waves', is set for release in August 2026. The first single from the album, 'Howl', was released last month. The forthcoming album is described as revisiting themes of love, memory, family, and self-reckoning, while embracing ambiguity and emotional change.

Simon stated she decided to speak about her diagnosis after receiving inquiries from fans about her relative silence. While she does not view Parkinson's as a 'gift or a blessing', she is 'still learning how to live with it'. She expressed deep gratitude for the support of her children, family, friends, caregivers, and medical professionals, acknowledging their role in helping her through difficult days. Simon indicated that while she moves more slowly and relies on others more, she remains actively engaged in life.
