Burnham ready to challenge Trump on national interest

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated he would be prepared to challenge Donald Trump if it is in Britain's national interest, asserting that national interests must be prioritised. Mr Burnham described his first exchange with the US President as 'really warm' in an interview with the BBC. He indicated that he could not guarantee he would always agree with Mr Trump and might need to voice differing opinions that are beneficial for Britain.

Prioritising National Interest

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Burnham emphasised that defending the nation's interests would be his primary duty. He stated, "You have to defend your own national interest before anything else. That's what you're required to do if you're to do this job properly." He also expressed concern regarding potential conflict with Iran and indicated he would not hesitate to express his views on such matters. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp commented that while good relations with the US are necessary, disagreements should be addressed honestly.

Defence Spending and Election Timing

The Prime Minister also addressed defence spending, acknowledging the resignation of his Chancellor, John Healey, over commitments to increase defence expenditure to 3% of GDP by 2030. Mr Burnham stated that his new Chancellor was appointed with full awareness of his views on defence spending. He indicated that the immediate priority is to ensure the defence investment plan is fully funded, with further details to be worked out before the budget later this year. Mr Burnham explicitly ruled out the possibility of an early general election before 2029, stating that the public does not desire one. He said his focus is on "getting the country back where it should be."
