Jessie Barry stated that the app's ability to identify a vast number of species is a result of AI and the data provided by users. Cornell's Sound ID tool, a feature within Merlin, has been used for an impressive 4.4 billion identifications. Beyond Merlin, other bird identification apps are also seeing increased usage. Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reported that the Birda app has experienced a 31% increase in downloads this year.

The surge in popularity is also linked to a growing interest in birdwatching among younger demographics. Jessie Barry noted a discernible shift towards younger users engaging with the app, many of whom are new to birding. These applications are making the hobby more accessible and inclusive, allowing individuals to identify birds using either visual or auditory cues.
