Barnet Faces Heatwave as Wildfire Risk Rises

Londoners, including those in Barnet, are being warned of an increased risk of wildfires as the UK prepares for its fourth heatwave of the year. Temperatures in south-east England are forecast to reach 35C by Wednesday, prompting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue an amber heat-health alert for the capital. This alert, active from Tuesday to Thursday, highlights the heightened health dangers associated with rising temperatures, particularly for vulnerable individuals. The Met Office has indicated that any fires starting in London and surrounding areas could become exceptionally severe due to the hot and dry conditions.

National Wildfire Incidents Increase

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) reported that fire and rescue services across England and Wales have dealt with 706 wildfires in 2026. A significant portion of these, 208 incidents, occurred between July 16 and July 28. Fire chiefs have stated that the wildfire risk remains high across the UK, with eight live incidents being monitored nationally. While the current figures for England and Wales are lower than those recorded by the same point last year, prolonged dry spells, warmer weather, and agricultural harvesting activities are creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread.

Phil Garrigan, chairman of the NFCC, emphasised the speed at which wildfire risk can escalate, noting that over 200 wildfires in just 12 days demonstrates this. He drew parallels to the severe wildfires seen in parts of Europe, suggesting that climate change is increasing the likelihood of larger and more complex wildfire incidents in the UK in the future. Garrigan stressed the need for continued investment in specialist wildfire capabilities, including aerial support, while also highlighting prevention as the primary defence.

Prevention and Public Advice

The NFCC advises that most wildfires are preventable and urges the public to exercise caution during hot weather. Simple actions such as disposing of cigarettes responsibly, refraining from using disposable barbecues in open spaces, and taking litter home can significantly reduce the risk of fires starting. July has provisionally been recorded as 3C above the average temperature across the UK, potentially making it one of the hottest Julys on record. Anyone observing signs of fire is advised to call 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service immediately.
