The UKHSA has advised that the rising temperatures could lead to an increased risk of illness and mortality, particularly among the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Care settings may also see indoor environments exceed recommended temperature thresholds, requiring careful clinical risk assessment. Asthma + Lung UK has specifically warned that the hot weather can exacerbate breathing difficulties for people with lung conditions, increasing the likelihood of severe asthma attacks. Emma Rubach, Head of Health Advice at Asthma + Lung UK, stated that heatwaves are becoming more common and pose a growing danger to the 12 million people in the UK living with lung conditions. She advised those affected to stay out of the heat during peak times, keep homes cool, and ensure they take prescribed medication.

Wildfire Concerns Escalate

The dry and hot conditions have also raised concerns about wildfires. The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has reported that fire and rescue services in England and Wales have attended 706 wildfires in 2026. In the 12 days leading up to 28 July, 208 incidents were recorded. Phil Garrigan, chairman of the NFCC, highlighted that while UK wildfires are typically smaller than those seen in southern Europe, the long-term effects of climate change are contributing to larger and more complex incidents. He stressed the importance of continued investment in specialist wildfire capabilities and emphasised that prevention remains the strongest defence, urging the public to exercise extreme care during hot weather.
