The research indicated that 51% of employers had made hiring decisions influenced by a candidate's appearance, with factors such as untidy clothing or poorly maintained hair cited as reasons for rejection.

Min-Hsuan Tu, a professor of human resources at the University of Buffalo and lead author of a 2021 paper on the subject, noted that individuals perceived as attractive often receive more favourable attention. This preferential treatment, which can begin in childhood, may lead to enhanced non-verbal communication skills and greater confidence. Tu stated that people often associate attractiveness with positive qualities such as intelligence and trustworthiness.

However, attractiveness in a professional context extends beyond natural features. Tu explained that clothing choices and the application of make-up are also considered part of a person's overall presentation. Making a conscious effort to look presentable is therefore important, as it can convey a sense of professionalism and preparedness to a potential employer.

She explained that a well-groomed and professionally presented individual demonstrates that they are taking the job opportunity seriously. This careful presentation can also assist interviewers in visualising the candidate within the company environment or interacting with clients.

Hickey also pointed out the psychological benefit for the candidate, stating that feeling good about one's appearance can directly boost confidence, potentially leading to improved performance during the interview. This sentiment was echoed by Madeline Drucker, a 21-year-old who successfully secured internships through video interviews. She prepared for virtual assessments with the same attention to detail as in-person meetings, including styling her hair, applying make-up, and choosing professional attire, believing that looking her best enhanced her performance.

Taya Reed, a 23-year-old science graduate, successfully obtained a marketing role with a womenswear brand after carefully considering her interview attire. She opted for an outfit that she felt aligned with the company's culture, aiming to make a positive first impression. Similarly, Matt Cohen, a 31-year-old master's degree holder, ensured he wore a buttoned-down shirt and maintained a groomed appearance for his interviews, even when the company culture was more casual, to project professionalism and readiness for client interactions.
