Acid attacker of journalist Russell Findlay freed

William Burns, who attacked Russell Findlay with acid and a knife in 2015, has been released from prison. Findlay, who is now the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, received a letter informing him of the impending release a few weeks ago. Burns, aged 65, was sentenced to 10 years in jail with an additional five years of supervision after his release.

The incident occurred two days before Christmas in 2015 at Findlay's Glasgow home. Burns, disguised as a postman, threw a corrosive substance, believed to be sulphuric acid, at Findlay. He then attempted to stab the journalist. Findlay managed to overpower his attacker and detain him until police arrived. His then 12-year-old daughter witnessed the event. Burns is described as a career criminal with a prior conviction for shooting a woman during an armed robbery.

The motive for the attack has not been officially confirmed, but it is suspected to have been a contract killing linked to Findlay's investigative journalism concerning organised crime groups. Findlay stated that while he is not fearful of Burns or his associates, the possibility of future threats remains a concern. He told BBC Scotland News that some individuals might view him as having 'unfinished business' with them due to his past work.

Findlay highlighted the capability of organised crime groups to target politicians, referencing a Conservative councillor who resigned in 2021 following firebomb attacks. He expressed his belief that the targeting of politicians in Scotland was becoming more prevalent. Despite the risks, Findlay stated he would not alter his life or cease his efforts to expose organised crime, asserting that showing weakness would not deter such groups.

He also criticised Scotland's parole process, describing it as 'shrouded in secrecy' and suggesting the justice system does not adequately consider victims. Findlay stated he would not forgive Burns for his actions, describing the attack as calculated, targeted, and extreme, with the potential to cause death or permanent injury. He identified Burns as an enforcer for a major organised crime group responsible for significant harm.

Findlay encouraged police and prosecutors to investigate unsolved murders in Paisley from the 1990s, suggesting Burns may have information relevant to these cases.
