TfL begins £10.8m Brent Cross flyover renewal after 7.5-tonne weight limit

Transport for London will start renewing the Brent Cross flyover at Staples Corner this month, after securing £10.8 million from the Department for Transport. The A41 structure has been under a 7.5-tonne weight restriction since October 2022, disrupting freight and bus routes in the area.

Enabling works begin later this month, with main construction scheduled to start at the end of September. The project is expected to last several years, with TfL describing it as essential to maintaining access for 120,000 daily vehicles and 18 bus routes carrying 10,000 passengers.

Why the flyover matters

The Brent Cross interchange connects the A41 and the North Circular Road, serving as a key route for traffic between north-west London, Wembley, Heathrow and central London. A letter from TfL, posted by Cricklewood councillor Tariq Dar, stated the flyover supports ongoing regeneration in the area, including plans for 8,900 new homes and 26,000 jobs.

TfL said the renewal will prevent around £1.7 billion in economic impacts over the next 60 years. Without the works, future restrictions or closures could disrupt commercial traffic and local businesses. The council has raised concerns about the ageing infrastructure for years, with Cllr Dar calling Staples Corner a gateway that should reflect the community.

What happens next

TfL will begin wider communications later this month to inform residents, commuters and businesses about travel advice and project updates. The Brent Cross footbridge beneath the flyover remains closed on safety grounds, with a signed diversion in place. Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Once the flyover works are complete and the weight restriction lifted, TfL expects to turn its attention to the mid-level roundabout and A406 slip roads. No timeline has been given for these later stages.
