The Young Reporter Scheme, organised by Newsquest, has commenced for its nineteenth consecutive year. The programme offers students aged between Years 10 and 13 the opportunity to gain practical experience within the media industry. Through the scheme, students are tasked with writing articles on a monthly basis. These pieces are subsequently published across Newsquest's extensive network of national online newspapers. Over an eight-month period, participants develop crucial skills, including meeting deadlines and producing content to a professional standard. Organisers state that the programme is designed to prepare students for university and future careers, regardless of whether they intend to pursue journalism.

Alison Cotton, Head of English at Croydon High, who has been involved with the scheme for several years, commented on its value. She noted that the programme has become an important part of the school's extra-curricular activities for Key Stage 4 and 5 students. Ms Cotton highlighted that pupils find the experience both exciting and challenging, offering them an insight into a career in news journalism. She added that managing time, generating ideas, and producing publishable work to monthly deadlines are significant achievements for the students, and the balance of independence and support allows them to develop as writers.
