Vintage buses return to historic East Barnet route

The London Bus Museum is organising a heritage day on October 3, offering residents a chance to travel on vintage buses along a historic route. Between 10am and 5pm, a free service will run on buses dating from the 1950s to the 1970s, operating on the 106 route between Finsbury Park and Ash Grove bus garage in Hackney. This event coincides with an open day at the Ash Grove garage, celebrating 45 years of the bus company Stagecoach's operation there.

A route with deep historical roots

The 106 route itself has a long history, tracing back to the late 19th century when horse-drawn omnibuses were the primary mode of transport. Motor buses replaced the horse-drawn services in 1912, and the route was renumbered as 106 in 1914. Over the decades, it has undergone numerous changes, extending eastwards in the 1920s and seeing parts of its service modified or withdrawn at various points, including a withdrawal east of Blackwall Tunnel in 1971. Modern double-deckers were introduced in 2001, and Stagecoach London took over the route's operation in August 2022.

Vintage vehicles and accessibility

The heritage day will showcase iconic London buses, including the Routemaster and its predecessor, the RT-type bus. While these vehicles offer a nostalgic experience with features like open platforms and conductors, they differ from modern standards. They are not equipped with low floors, and space for modern buggies and wheelchairs is limited. The museum has stated that conductors will assist passengers with accessibility needs and families with young children. Well-behaved dogs on a lead are permitted on board, provided they do not sit on the seats.

Open day at Ash Grove garage

The heritage bus service runs alongside the normal daily service on the 106 route. The open day at Ash Grove bus garage will offer visitors a behind-the-scenes look, with admission fees contributing to Macmillan Cancer Support. The event aims to celebrate London's public transport legacy and provide an experience of daily life in the capital during the mid-20th century.
