Spurs Record £237m Spend Signals New Ambition

Tottenham Hotspur has committed a club-record £237 million to player acquisitions during the current transfer window, a move that defender Micky van de Ven believes demonstrates a significant shift in the club's outlook. The substantial investment follows a Premier League season where the team finished 17th, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day. Van de Ven described the previous campaign as "unacceptable" and expressed optimism about the team's future under manager Roberto de Zerbi.

Shift in Playing Style Expected

The significant spending comes after a turbulent season that saw three different managers at the helm. Thomas Frank was dismissed after less than eight months, followed by an interim spell from Igor Tudor, before Roberto de Zerbi took charge for the final seven games. Van de Ven anticipates a change in the team's on-field approach, suggesting De Zerbi's influence will lead to more possession-based and offensive play. "It's going to be more with the ball, I think, more about playing football," Van de Ven told BBC Sport. "I think it's also going to be more enjoyable for people to watch because we'll be playing offensive football."

Key Signings Bolster Squad

Among the notable acquisitions are midfielder Mateus Fernandes, signed from West Ham for £85 million, and Sandro Tonali, who joined from Newcastle for £100 million. These deals, occurring within two days of each other, marked new club transfer records. Additionally, defender Jan Paul van Hecke was recruited from Brighton for £52 million. The club also secured the free transfers of experienced players Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, and Martin Dubravka. Van de Ven, who himself joined in 2023 on a six-year contract, is reportedly in discussions regarding a new deal and has welcomed the new arrivals, noting they have integrated well into the squad.

Van de Ven highlighted the positive atmosphere within the squad during pre-season training. "The feeling of the team is really good, to be honest," he stated. "I have really enjoyed working with him [De Zerbi]. That's what we have been doing in this pre-season, and the guys who are coming in have been unbelievable as well."
