Sheep return to Golders Green meadow for conservation grazing

Five ewes have been introduced to Anthill Meadow on Hampstead Heath, near Golders Green, to undertake conservation grazing. The flock, comprising Norfolk Horn and Oxford Down breeds, has been loaned from Mudchute City Farm for their second stint this year. They will remain on the meadow for two weeks and will be monitored by ecologists from the City of London Corporation.

This initiative uses natural grazing as a low-impact method to enhance local biodiversity, supporting habitats that could be damaged by conventional machinery. Meadow ants, which in turn support wildlife such as green woodpeckers, are known to thrive in this area of the Heath. The practice aims to support nature recovery and is seen as an alternative to mowing.

History of Conservation Grazing

The City of London Corporation, which manages Hampstead Heath as a registered charity, first trialled conservation grazing in 2019. This marked the return of sheep to the Heath for the first time in over 50 years. A ceremonial declaration of grazing took place on Wednesday, attended by representatives from the Woolmakers’ and Butchers’ Liveries.

Alderman Gregory Jones KC, Chair of the Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen’s Park Committee, stated that the activity is focused on biodiversity rather than commercial gain. He explained that conventional mowing could damage ant hills, which are important for the local ecosystem. He noted that historical records show concerns about climate and drought impacting sheep grazing as far back as the 19th century, drawing parallels with current climate concerns.

Future Expansion and Funding

Alderman Jones indicated that there are plans to potentially expand the conservation grazing project to other green spaces, including Highgate Wood. The Corporation is seeking financial support for such expansions, hoping that individuals, companies, or organisations interested in biodiversity conservation might sponsor the initiatives. He mentioned that while the Corporation spends approximately £13 million annually on the Heath's upkeep, with only a portion recovered through charges, additional funds would be necessary to justify diverting resources from current maintenance.

The Corporation manages Hampstead Heath, which includes maintaining wild areas, recreational spaces, and dog walking zones, requiring significant expert intervention. Alderman Jones expressed a desire to expand the conservation grazing programme and encourage public and corporate engagement, noting that even modest financial contributions could make a difference.

The current grazing period for the sheep is scheduled to conclude on September 21, after which they will return to Mudchute City Farm. The project is expected to recommence next year.
