Schools in Barnet: how admissions work, and what actually decides a place

Barnet is one of the reasons families move to north London, and school admissions are the process those families understand least well. The rules are published, but they are spread across several places and phrased in a way that hides what actually decides an offer.

Secondary school applications for entry the following September close on 31 October. Primary applications close on 15 January. National offer days follow on 1 March for secondary and 16 April for primary.

Late applications are considered only after every on-time one has been placed, which in a borough as oversubscribed as Barnet usually means the popular schools are already full. Missing the deadline is the single most damaging thing a parent can do.

Selective schools are earlier still. Registration for their entrance tests typically closes in the spring or early summer before the October deadline, months ahead of the ordinary process.

One form, whatever the borough

You apply through the council where you live, not the council where the school is. A Barnet resident applying to a school in Harrow or Hertfordshire still applies through Barnet, on the same form.

You can name several preferences. Ranking matters: the system offers you the highest-ranked school you qualify for, so naming a realistic option lower down costs you nothing and protects you if the first choice does not come through.

What actually decides a place

When a school is oversubscribed, places are allocated by published oversubscription criteria, applied in order. The order is broadly consistent across community schools: children in care first, then those with a medical or social need supported by professional evidence, then siblings already at the school, then distance.

For most families, distance is the criterion that decides it. It is normally measured in a straight line from home to a fixed point at the school, not by walking route, and the qualifying distance changes every year with demand. A school that reached half a mile one year may reach a third of a mile the next.

This is why last year's cut-off distances are useful as a guide and dangerous as a guarantee. Barnet publishes them each year, and they are worth reading before deciding a move is safe.

Faith schools and selective schools work differently

Church and other faith schools set their own criteria, usually built around evidence of practice — attendance at a named place of worship over a defined period, confirmed by a religious leader. These often require a supplementary form submitted directly to the school as well as the council application.

Barnet's selective schools, including Queen Elizabeth's in Barnet and The Henrietta Barnett School in Hampstead Garden Suburb, admit on test performance. Distance plays no part for the highest scorers, which is why they draw pupils from across London and beyond. They are among the most oversubscribed schools in the country.

If you are refused

A refusal is not the end. Three things happen at once, and it is worth doing all of them.

You are automatically placed on the waiting list for any school you ranked above the one you were offered. Lists are ordered by the same criteria, not by when you joined, so a family moving closer can move above you. Movement is common through the summer as other families accept places elsewhere.

You also have a statutory right of appeal to an independent panel. Appeals succeed most often where the admission arrangements were applied incorrectly, or where the case for that specific school is unusually strong on evidenced grounds. Simply preferring the school is not a ground.

For infant classes, in reception through year two, the law caps classes at 30 and appeals can only succeed on narrow grounds. Appeal panels have very little room there, and it is better to know that before investing hope in the process.

Deadlines, criteria and last year's cut-off distances are published annually by Barnet Council, and individual school arrangements sit in each school's own admissions policy. Both change, so check the current year rather than relying on what applied to an older sibling.
