Married Academics Graduate Together at London Met

Dr Katherine Fisher, 34, and Matthew Fisher, 33, who are married and both work at London Metropolitan University, have completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. They received their qualifications together at a recent ceremony in London.

A Shared Academic Journey

The couple met in 2011 while studying undergraduate chemistry at the University of Oxford, where they were assigned as laboratory partners. They became close friends before developing a romantic relationship. Dr Fisher, originally from Essex, is a lecturer in the university’s School of Human Sciences. Mr Fisher, who is from Oxford, will commence a lecturing role in August after previously serving as an academic mentor. They now reside together in northwest London and were married last year.

Working together at London Met has been a positive experience for Mr Fisher, who stated that they can "bounce ideas off each other and have your best supporter and intellectual equal by your side." Both academics share a strong commitment to teaching and student development. Dr Fisher described their shared passion, saying, "We're both passionate about teaching, about learning development, and about seeing the students thrive and flourish at London Met."

A Meaningful Graduation

Although they pursued the same postgraduate course, they did so a year apart. This timing allowed them to collaborate on teaching initiatives and present jointly at an education conference. Dr Fisher's own graduation was postponed by a year due to the passing of her grandfather. The couple found graduating together particularly significant, as they had not had the opportunity to do so at Oxford, having attended different colleges. Describing the ceremony, Dr Fisher called it "a magical moment," adding that after she had walked across the stage, she waited for her husband and they completed the final part of the runway hand-in-hand.
