JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old player at Manchester United, has requested that the club cancel his registration. This move would allow the young player to become a free agent. Manchester United reportedly believes it can persuade the player to remain with the club and contest the cancellation request. Premier League regulations stipulate that for a player's registration to be cancelled, there must be an agreement between the club, the player, and their parent or carer.

Gabriel's father, Joe O'Cearuill, is a former professional footballer. O'Cearuill, whose birth name is Joseph Junior Andreou O'Cearuill, is reportedly a significant influence on his son's career. The player's name change is understood to be for marketability purposes, according to reports. O'Cearuill himself had a 12-year playing career, beginning at youth level with Leyton Orient and Watford. He joined Arsenal in the summer of 2006 and was named on the bench for a League Cup match. He was later loaned to Brighton before joining Barnet permanently in the following summer.
Following his time at Barnet, O'Cearuill played for 11 different clubs in the lower leagues of English football and also for St. Patricks Athletic in the League of Ireland. He retired in 2016 after a third spell with Haringey. O'Cearuill also represented the Republic of Ireland, earning two senior international caps in May 2007.
