The 7th Edmonton Guides, the sole remaining girl-guiding unit in Upper Edmonton, continues to foster confidence and self-esteem in approximately 30 girls. The unit offers a wide range of activities, from cooking and sports to camping and life skills, on Thursday evenings.

At the core of the unit's enduring success is Christine Swallow, affectionately known as ‘brown owl’. Ms Swallow has committed over 30 years to girl-guiding, witnessing generations of young people develop through the programme. She described her primary reward as observing the girls gain confidence and master new skills, noting the particular importance of the unit for girls from less privileged backgrounds.

Ms Swallow, who was herself a brownie, has now welcomed her granddaughter into the 7th Edmonton Guides. The unit has expanded significantly under her tenure, now encompassing Rainbows, Guides, and Young Leaders, catering to girls aged four to 18. She highlighted the value of residential trips and first aid training in developing self-reliance and leadership qualities in a relaxed environment.

Edgware synagogue appoints Rabbi Debbie Young‑Somers as Senior Rabbi

The appointment, effective 1 May 2027, follows Rabbi Mark Goldsmith’s departure and reflects the congregation’s confidence in her long‑standing involvement.

Lorraine Fergus, another leader at the unit, has been involved in girl-guiding for 21 years. Her group merged with the 7th Edmonton Guides in 2020. Last year, Ms Fergus was recognised with the ‘Middlesex East Good Service Award’ for her service to the organisation. The unit has also seen ten of its young members receive Jack Petchey awards, acknowledging their achievements.

Keira, a 17-year-old young leader who has been with the group for a decade, spoke about the lasting friendships and skills she has gained. She now assists with the Brownies section and encourages other young girls to join, stating that the experience has significantly contributed to her personal growth.

The unit maintains strong relationships with parents, offering an open-door policy for discussions and concerns. Many parents and former members maintain contact with the group. The organisation continues to provide a space for girls to learn, socialise, and build confidence, with many activities, including camping and unit cinema trips, proving popular among the girls.
