Barnet Young Man's Homelessness Journey

A young man from Barnet, identified as Kai, has shared his experience of overcoming homelessness with the assistance of the youth homelessness charity Centrepoint. Kai, now 29, became homeless shortly before his 18th birthday after his father, with whom he lived and cared for during his terminal illness, passed away. As he was not named on the tenancy agreement, he was left without a stable place to live.

Kai was offered a place within Centrepoint's Independent Living Programme. This scheme caps rent at one-third of a resident's income and offers guidance on managing finances, securing employment, and maintaining a tenancy. He described the initial period in his one-bedroom flat as a significant adjustment but noted the practical help, including food vouchers, provided by Centrepoint made a substantial difference during his first year.

Through youth employment initiatives, Kai trained in security and CCTV operations, eventually securing work in building security. At the age of 26, he moved into his own home, a milestone he described as life-changing, enabling him to focus on stability and future planning. He now contributes to Centrepoint's lived experience advisory board, assisting in shaping the charity's services for young people facing homelessness.

Kai's personal journey is set against the backdrop of a significant housing crisis affecting young people. Centrepoint's 2024/25 Move On report indicates that more than 130,000 young individuals are currently on social housing waiting lists. The report suggests that at the current rate of provision, it would take over six years to satisfy existing demand, even if no new applications were submitted.

A further challenge highlighted by the charity is the mismatch in property size. Just a quarter of available social homes are one-bedroom units, despite nearly half of young applicants requiring this type of accommodation. Ella Nuttal, Centrepoint's Research Manager, stated that while government initiatives for homelessness prevention are noted, increasing the construction of suitable social homes is crucial for substantial change.

The availability of affordable private rental options is also diminishing. The number of Houses in Multiple Occupation, often a more accessible option for young people, has fallen by 10% since the 2019/20 period. Centrepoint warns that without increased housebuilding, many young people will continue to face homelessness and be excluded from stable housing opportunities.
