Born into modest circumstances with limited formal schooling, Raffles spent a considerable part of his career as a clerk for the East India Company before undertaking assignments in Java and Sumatra. His personal life was marked by tragedy, including the loss of his first wife and four of his children. He himself passed away at the age of 45.

A self-taught individual, Raffles developed a keen interest in religion and culture, and became proficient in Malay. He engaged with the abolitionist movement and sought to curb the opium trade. His administration of Singapore involved clashes with colleagues over its governance. While his records sometimes downplayed the violence associated with colonial rule, his contribution to ZSL, alongside figures like Charles Darwin, influenced perceptions of the natural world. His wife, Sophia, was noted by the Barnet Post as the first woman to become a fellow of ZSL.
